The GTech Lawnmower Battle: 2.0 vs CLM50

GTech already had a pretty perfect product in their previous mower, which is why they received a 9.2 rating in my review. And they were smart enough to know that if you’ve got something perfect, you shouldn’t mess with it.

The new CLM50 version doesn’t have any of the core features removed, but is built with the latest technology available. This ensures a much more powerful performance, better durability, and a longer lifespan.

Besides that, the new lawnmower has a white finish which gives it that elegant feel and looks much better out in the garden sunlight.

But the main performance-related improvement comes in the blades. They feature the latest omniblade cutting technology that ensures you always get the power you need.

Battery-powered lawnmowers have long been thought to be inferior to petrol or corded electric ones, but with technological developments such as this one, the difference has become almost unnoticeable, especially for average home users. 

The intelligent blade runs at 2,800 rpm, but if it senses extra thick grass, it increases the rpm to 3,500, making sure it can cut through anything that comes up against it!

For homeowners, one of the most important considerations when getting a lawnmower is how easy it is to use and store. The GTech Lawnmower CLM50 is one of the best on the market in that regard.

Weighing only 13.5kg and having large wheels, the mower is very easy to move around any curves in your garden. 

It’s also very easy to start – set the battery, push the activation button, and pull the lever. That’s it! 

And once you’re done mowing, you’ll be glad to know that the mower can fold to a very compact size. It won’t take up much storage space in your shed, and getting it in and out will be a breeze.

Adjustable cutting height

In order to have full control over the finish of your lawn, adjusting the cutting height is essential.

The height lever is very easy to use on the new Gtech CLM50 Lawnmower and is placed right next to the main handle for quick changes.

There are 5 different increments of 10mm, ranging from 30mm to 80mm. So, no matter the occasion, you will have a setting for whatever you need, from a quick tidy up to the first cut of the season.

Top Tip: Always start with a taller cutting height and work your way down gradually, otherwise you risk cutting back to the dirt if you have an uneven lawn

50L grass bin

Let’s be honest – emptying the grass bin is by far the least enjoyable task of garden work and can be a bit frustrating if you have to do it too often.

Top Tip: Get a compact compost bin (UK made) and enjoy naturally made compost all year round for your garden.

That’s why GTech have made their grass bin as big as they can, at 50L. With fewer stops to empty out the bin, you can finish the job much more quickly and without tiring yourself out.

The 50L grass bin also has a handy indicator flap that will let you know when the bag is full and needs emptying, a handy feature that ensures you don’t have to wonder and stop to check the bin.

Generous cutting width

With a 420mm cutting width, you won’t need too many passes on your lawn to finish the job.

This comes in very handy for older people that don’t wish to spend too much time and need a quick mowing job.

The blades also extend to the width of the wheels so you don’t miss bits or have to hang your wheels over the edge of the garden to get every last piece.

Battery-powered

Plug and play, without any cord to get in your way…

The best thing about having a battery-powered lawnmower is that there is no cable to worry about. You can roam free around your garden with no restrictions, and best of all, no petrol fumes either!

The CLM50 uses a 48V Lithium-ion battery, that can provide up to 40 minutes of run time. Once the battery is empty, you’ll be glad to know that it only takes one hour for a full charge. 

So even if you run out of battery during mowing, you can quickly recharge it while you take a tea break.

Unfortunately, the GTech CLM50 was just released and there aren’t any reviews for this product yet. However, the original version has more than 2,000 positive reviews, and they mainly focus on the ease of use and compact storage size.

Is it Suitable for You..?

The CLM50 lawnmower is designed for small to medium-sized gardens, so if that sounds like you, then the GTech CLM50 is a fantastic option to buy!

It’s incredibly easy to use, and with such a lightweight design, even the elderly can use it. Once you’re done, storing the mower doesn’t take that much space, so even if you have limited storage space, it’s still a good option.

It’s also petrol free and quiet so there are no horrible fumes to worry about! But, for larger gardens with a lot of overgrown grass, you might be better suited with one of these alternatives.

They have designed a lawn mower head that can be attached to their trimmer pole in just a few simple steps. Just take it out, attach the pole, insert the battery, turn the safety switch, and you’re good to go.

Yep, it’s that simple!

Just like the assembly process, which we described above, the operation of this lawn mower is extremely easy. Just assemble it in a few quick steps, and take it out to the lawn.

There’s no cord to get caught around as you mow, so you can freely move wherever you need. It’s also very easy to push around, and it can fit in beneath garden tables, chairs, and other features.

This means you won’t have to move your furniture before you mow, saving you precious time and energy.

No grass box

Another great feature that contributes to the ease of use of the SLM50 is the fact that it doesn’t have a grass box. Instead, the grass clippings stay on the ground and naturally decompose for fertilizing the soil. 

To ensure best results though, you’ll need to frequently cut your grass, so the grass clippings are not too large. If they’re too large, they can suffocate the soil and lead to thatch. 

Yes, I know frequent cutting seems difficult to achieve, but with the SLM50 it doesn’t have to be.

It’s so lightweight and easy to use, that everyone can set aside 20-30 minutes every weekend. This ties in perfectly with our next feature.

The Gtech Small Lawn Mower weighs only 2.5 kg, or 3.5 kg when assembled with the battery and the pole. This makes it one of the lightest lawn mowers ever.

With such a lightweight design, even elderly people can use it regularly without tiring themselves too much. And it also motivates you to mow more frequently since it makes it such an easy task. 

Light enough to be pushed with one hand, it can reach narrow areas and small spaces that other lawn mowers can’t. 

And once it’s time to store it away, just put it in a drawer in your shed or garage. Yes, it’s that small!

High-quality design

I must compliment the GTech SLM50 for its clever design. The cutting wheel is right in the center of the base, so it can reach each side of the mower, allowing you to get close cuts to your wall and other edges.

It also has an adjustable height mechanism that goes from 40 mm to 50 mm. The blades are made from carbon steel and have a 5200 RPM constant speed.

There are plenty of safety features as well to avoid any potential accidents – one safety key that must be in the “on” position, a safety switch that needs to be pressed to start, and the “auto-off” lock that activates when the handle is raised.

The G Tech SLM50 was just recently launched, so there aren’t plenty of opinions about it online yet. But the first impressions seem to be encouraging.

What’s the Downside…?

Judging by the first impressions, the only complaint people have right now is that it’s not suited for their larger lawns. But GTech don’t advertise it as a solution for larger lawns, so this one is more about the misunderstanding rather than the mower itself.

The SLM50 seemed a good idea as it utilised the batteries from HT50 and the GT50 which I’m very happy with. The SLM50, however, was far too small for my needs so I returned this and bought the CLM50 which seems to be far more practical. – George S.

Is it Suitable for You..?

To avoid any misunderstandings like the gentleman who bought this for his large lawn, we must note again that this lawn mower is meant as a “mini” version and designed for smaller lawns. That’s why it doesn’t feature a grass box.

So, if you have a small to medium-sized lawn and will keep a regular cutting schedule, it’s really hard to see past the SLM50. It’s extremely lightweight, easy to use, and doesn’t require power cords.

Plus, if you already own a grass or hedge trimmer from GTech, you can get incredible savings compared to getting an entire lawn mower.

Finally, you can get some more free time to relax. The robot mower from G Tech is fully automatic and continually cuts the grass as it moves across the lawn. It even moves up and down slopes and avoids obstacles. 

Once it finishes mowing the lawn, it will return to its base and recharge for the next run. It’s also programmed to never run at below 30% battery, so it will automatically return to the base station to recharge if it detects a low battery percentage.

A pretty useful feature in my opinion. You don’t have to lift a finger – just sit back and enjoy the views in your garden.

Another fact I love is that you no longer have to worry about how charged it is or how long it takes to charge because it will do all of this automatically. If it is running low on charge, it will head back to base, charge up and carry on later when it can.

Easy to use

The easy to use interface accessed on the machine

New technology can be difficult to understand sometimes, but Gtech has ensured that their robot lawn mower is as easy to use as it can be. It’s extremely user-friendly and has clearly marked programs to run.

All the features are accessed through an LCD panel from where you can schedule cuts, select from 3 different cutting modes, and choose a cutting height between 25 and 55mm for that perfect lawn finish.

It’s also pretty easy to set up. You’ll need to set a garden perimeter with the provided wire in which the mower will operate.

The instructions are clearly outlined and detailed with pictures for every step in the instruction manual, so you’ll have no problem setting it up in less than an hour. 

Safe and secure

To avoid any unwanted use of the GTech robot lawnmower, there’s an anti-tamper 4-digit PIN code. It will also trigger an alarm if it’s lifted from the lawn while it’s still cutting to prevent any accidents. 

The mower also features built-in motion sensors to detect any obstacles along the way and stop if it encounters an issue. This prevents any injuries to your pets, garden pots, or any other garden accessories you have. 

And finally, if it starts to rain, the robot mower will stop cutting immediately and return to its base to recharge.

No grass box to empty

The sharp carbon steel blades on the GTech robot lawnmower are very efficient and cut tiny pieces of grass every day. These small pieces of grass drop back to the ground and naturally decompose, serving as a soil fertilizer and keeping your grass healthy.

It also removes the need for a grass collection box and compost bin, and more importantly, emptying the grass collection box!

But the big question is: “Doesn’t it leave grass clippings on the lawn?”

Yes, it does, but because you allow the robot mower to run way more frequently than if you were cutting the grass yourself, the grass clippings left behind are very small and therefore almost unnoticeable.

It’s like having a cleaner in your house. Keeping on top of the work means it’s easier to do and less noticeable. If you leave your grass for 1-2 weeks without cutting, the clippings will be too large to leave on the ground.

The Ryobi 18V lawnmower boasts a cordless convenience with a cutting width (33cm) that’s suitable for small to medium sized gardens. Despite the smaller cutting width, this tool boasts numerous features that make it worthwhile.

For starters, the garden tool boasts three power options. This model is ideal if you already own a battery and charger. If not, you can settle for Ryobi’s RLM18X33B40 model that features a 4Ah battery or the brand’s RLM18C33B25 variation that’s equipped with a 2.5Ah battery.

Side note…The difference between a 4Ah and 2.5Ah is worth noting. In general, a larger Ah (Amp Hours) number means it delivers longer run-time and has more power.

Back to the Ryobi mower…

Better still, the mower has an EasyEdge system that lets you mow right to the edge of the lawn. Added to that are an ergonomic handle design and 5 cutting heights to cater for different grass heights and conditions.

The Ryobi 33cm mower with Easy Edge technology

As mentioned, Ryobi 18V cordless lawnmower is available in 3 options: OLM1833B (without battery), RLM18C33B25 (with 2.5Ah battery), and RLM18X33B40 (with 4.0Ah battery).

The 4.0Ah battery can run for an average of 30 minutes on each charge. And it’s compatible with any Ryobi power tool with the ONE+ logo. Thus, if you already own such a Ryobi tool, you can purchase the OLM1833B model at a cheaper price.

The 2.5Ah battery model is ideal for really small lawns, as it only runs for 15-20minutes. Note, you can purchase a 5.0Ah battery separately to increase your mower’s runtime.

(Each battery variation has a 120 minutes charging time.)

5 cutting heights

The Ryobi 33cm lawnmower has 5 cutting heights, giving you the freedom to mow your lawn to a height that suits you.

Its single-point central adjustment is operated with a single lever to provide multiple cutting heights – from 25mm to 65mm. This cutting flexibility is quite rare in mowers of similar size.

Large Cutting Width

The cordless lawnmower boasts a 33cm cutting width, which despite being on the smaller side, is ideal for small to medium sized lawns (up to 150m²).

EasyEdge system

Being lightweight (approximately 9kg with a battery), the mover is perfect for people who cannot handle bulky tools. Think of a 70-year-old with back problems who has to carry the mower four steps to cut grass.

The deck is made from durable and hard-wearing plastics, making it suitable for outdoor use. The EasyEdge system takes mowing a notch higher – as it enables you to cut grass right to the edge, whether there is a fence or wall!

Better still, the mower boasts an ergonomic handle design for easy and comfortable use. Its control buttons are easy to reach further enhancing the mowing experience.

What’s more?

The mower boasts foldable handles at the midpoint. To fold the handles at the deck level, unscrew the lower-retaining bolts and pull the handle back out from the deck. That added to the collapsible grass bag make storage a breeze.

Large 35L grass box

Ryobi’s 33cm lawnmower features a 35L fabric bag with a plastic cover, which makes grass collection and emptying a cinch. The bag is easy to detach, however, attaching it takes some getting used to.

The fabric sides ensure god air circulation for optimal collection performance.

Better still, the Ryobi RLM18X33B40 9and other variations) features a mulching plug, that helps plough the cut grass back to the lawn – to prevent excessive transpiration and serve as a natural fertilizer.

Luckily, this mower has an OPC (Operator Presence Control) technology that ensures the engine will stop working once you let go of the handle.

In addition, the Hyundai HYM530SPR is fitted with a 38cm ribbed rear roller that provides extra stability for the mower without sacrificing any maneuverability like most other rollers do. Besides that, it also allows you to create the traditional British striped lawn effect.

The only downside of this lawn mower is that it’s not meant for overgrown lawns. The collection bag, although large, can have trouble collecting longer grass clippings.

However, the fact that it’s incredibly easy to use and manoeuvre means that you can mow more often and avoid having an overgrown lawn in the first place.

This downside is also noticeable in reviews of people who’ve used the Hyundai HYM530SPR.

My neighbour bought this and I assembled it for them. Easy to assemble, but very poor performance. Though it got a large collection box, the mower stalls even before half of the box is filled. This won’t cope with an overgrown lawn as it doesn’t have enough power to drive the cuttings well into the collection box, so I had to empty it when it was only a third full. However, when I used it on my shorter lawn, it performed without any issue and the collection box didn’t show any problems.

The key thing to remember? This is not designed for overgrown lawns. If you do need to use it on one, you could make sure to empty the collection bag regularly.

Is it Suitable for You..?

If you have a bigger lawn that requires regular maintenance, the Hyundai HYM530SPR is the perfect choice for you!

It’s so easy to use, you can mow your entire lawn in next to no time. You might not even need to empty out the collection bag, as it can hold up to 70 liters.

Or you can even use the rear discharge option to fertilize your lawn as you mow.

The Flymo 330 Glider Compact 330AX, which is a more powerful (1,700 Watts) machine with a larger box (22L), larger cutting width (33cm) yet remains compact.

The GTech Mower 2.0 is also worth mentioning here because it’s a cordless electric machine, but is way more expensive than the Flymo range.

Also something to mention here is the Flymo Lawn Rake, as you might want to look at that to remove thatch, dead grass and debris from your lawn to keep it looking luscious all year round.

Another corded mower that I have just updated is the Bosch Rotak 32R rotary mower. That’s a powerful machine, but not quite as powerful as this Hover Vac. It is more of a traditional style though, not a hovering one.

The bottom line…

That’s why I listened to those who’ve bought the Hyundai HYM3800E to see what they had to say.

Fortunately, almost all of them had a positive experience with this lawnmower. They mostly seem to be impressed by how easy it is to move it around and the quality of the cut.

This mower is suitable for small to medium size lawns and produces a great finish to my lawn. It is compact when folded and easy to carry around. I like the flexibility offered by the various locking points. Attention has been given to cable management to help keep it from tangling while in use. A few users have mentioned difficulties with the assembly instructions. They were hard to understand at first and required some experimenting with the mower.

However, for users who are more experienced with lawnmowers, the assembly shouldn’t present a problem, even with confusing instructions. And luckily it’s a one time job.

The only drawback was the assembly instructions- they can be much improved- as patience and logical thought are definitely required. However, we still managed to assemble it fairly quickly, and once this hurdle is overcome you’ll have a dream machine.

Is it Suitable for You..?

If you have a small to medium-sized lawn and limited storage space, it’s hard to see past the Hyundai HYM3800E. It’s ideally suited for gardens of around 15m2.

The foldable handles allow you to store it even in the smallest of spaces, and when you need it again, just pull it out, push a button and you can start mowing in a matter of seconds.

If time is also an issue for you, don’t worry. The lightweight design ensures you can move this around your garden pretty quickly, and with a 30L collection bag, you won’t need to stop multiple times in order to empty it out.

Alternatives to the Hyundai

Plenty of people are going for cordless electric mowers at the moment, the most notable of which is the GTech Mower. Also worthy of consideration is the extra powerful GreenWorks G40LM41 40V mower.
