GTech grass trimmer models Important Update
You may have noticed the different model numbers, such as GT (Grass Trimmer) 3.0 and 4.0, which can get confusing.
The original was just called the GTech grass trimmer, then the GT3.0 was released and now it’s been upgraded to the 4.0 (May 2020).
The ONLY difference between the 3.0 and 4.0 models is the design of the handle/shaft and a new harness. Here’s what you get in the boxes:
Note: The slight change in design means there is a tiny increase in weight. The new model is 1.85kg vs the old one at 1.75kg.
Note 2: The harness and new design mean that it is easier to use and ore comfortable
OK, let’s get started…
The original version, the GTech ST20, proved to be a great grass trimmer.
So good, in fact, that they kept the same model in production for several years.
It was about time they revisited the design, as there were some critical comments about its usability.
Mainly that it gave some users back and wrist ache whilst using it.
Have they fixed those issues? Let’s find out…
Note: You can no longer purchase the ST20 from GTech, but some other retailers might stock it, such as Argos and Amazon.
Here are the highlights…
Quality
- Additional handle for stability
- Comes with 20 new blades as standard
Usability
- Lightweight, weighing just 1.85 kg
- Head rotates 180° for trimming and edging
Features
- 23 cm cutting width
- Same battery as HT 3.0 hedge trimmer
Performance
- 30 min use from 4 hour charge
- Noise level: 96 db*
*Noise level is the same as a lawn mower or motorcycle from 10 m away.
Points to consider…
Seeing that they have updated this machine, it’s a little disappointing that they didn’t extend the battery life.
They did it with the hedge trimmer, so they must believe 30 mins is long enough for a grass trimmer.
The battery can be used for this grass trimmer and their hedge trimmer, the GTech Cordless Hedge Trimmer 3.0, which is handy as you’ll have a spare if you purchase both products.
A nice touch is that you can charge the battery on or off the unit, so you won’t lose it if you leave it on.
The head can rotate 180° to make it perfect for edging flower beds, while also usable for long grassy areas, around trees or under bushes.
Key Features
There is just 1 major upgrade to this strimmer from the previous version, the addition of a handle part way down the unit.
This does help make manoeuvring it a lot easier, which some users did complain about in the previous model.
Some people complained that it hurt their wrists, so that will please a lot of users I’m sure. Especially elderly gardeners who found gripping just the shaft a bit tough.
The other key features of this grass trimmer include:
- Easily changeable plastic blades, no string
- Incredibly lightweight, just 1.85 kg
- Interchangeable with the GTech Hedge Trimmer HT 3.0
Time to take a look at each of the key features in a little more detail.
Changeable Plastic Blades
You’re probably used to having string to cut the grass in your trimmer.
GTech have used an innovative, easy to change plastic blade instead.
There were reports that they wore down too quickly, so you get 20 blades with the trimmer.
You can also purchase more blades directly from them. Just pay postage. You get 50 for £3.99.
The blade does a good job on both grass and edges, but has been known to come off if you hit stones or rocks too often.
All in all, a good change to the fiddly string in most other grass trimmers.
Incredibly Lightweight
This grass trimmer is aimed at the DIY gardener. Someone who wants an easy to use, no mess, quiet power tool.
That’s why it’s so lightweight. At just 1.85 kg it’s impressively light.
The addition of a small handle on the shaft of the pole has added just a small bit of weight to the previous model, but not a lot.
Interchangeable Battery Pack
If you are on the market for both a hedge trimmer and a grass trimmer, you could do worse than purchasing this trimmer and their HT 3.0 hedge trimmer.
The battery packs are interchangeable.
This is a good move in terms of helping you get double the run time if you have both products.
It also means you could use the other battery if one runs out or dies, so you have a spare one at all times.
What are People Saying…?
Having only been released this summer, users have not had that long to use it in earnest.
But the good news is that it’s not that dissimilar to the old model. In fact, there are more similarities than differences!
So we can easily look at the positives from the old model, and there were many.
However, as mentioned previously, one issue was the handling which they have addressed with this new handle.
The other issue was the wear on the blades, which has also been addressed by providing you with more as standard.
What’s the Downside…?
This new grass trimmer has come to the market slightly higher priced than the old model, at £124.99.
To be fair, that’s not a bad price for what you get. It’s compact, well designed and lightweight. You can’t get that much better for the price.
Advantages
- Lightweight (1.85 kg)
- Interchangeable battery
- Extra blades with pack (20)
- New handle for easier use
Disadvantages
- Higher price
- No extended run time, still 30 mins
Is it Suitable for You..?
This is perfectly suited for those who like to do a bit of gardening but don’t have too large of a lawn to tend to.
Having only 30 mins run time, it’s not suitable for big gardens. However, it’s great for trimming around some trees and garden obstacles, then flipping the head to do the edges of the lawn and around the flower beds.
It will leave your garden looking finished to a higher standard than just using the lawn mower.
Being so light, too, means that it’s ideal for elderly users or getting your teenage kids to do the gardening.
It’s very quiet and clean because there are no oily engines or loud motors running. Being cordless electric means you have no cord either.
The bottom line…
This is a great buy if you want a perfect finish for your lawn edges and doing around your garden furniture, and can be stored very easily. For the price, it’s a good buy.
Where to purchase for the best price
I would recommend purchasing direct from GTech because they offer a 30-day refund promise and their customer service is excellent.
In addition, you automatically get a 2 year warranty when purchasing from them.
Note: Keep the box in case you need to return the item. There is also a £10 charge to cover postage for returns.

GTech Grass Trimmer Spares & Replacements
If you’re looking for spares, such as batteries and blades you can find them on the GTech support page, here.
There are a full range of available options, which can be tricky to find if you are searching for GTech grass trimmer spares on Google.
Personally, I would always recommend buying any spares direct from GTech because you never know if ones from other sites are cheap, fake alternatives.
