Does the GTech Pro cordless vacuum cleaner live up to the hype?
Good question…which I intend to answer in this in-depth review
*** IMPORTANT UPDATE ***
This model is no longer available because the GTech Pro 2 has been released.
Check out my new review of it and see it in action in the video I made, too.
UPDATE: The GTech Pro K9 version of this vacuum has been released, which I have reviewed. The GTech Pro model reviewed here is still available, but the K9 version has 3 new features.
The GTech pro continues to sell well and so GTech have not released a new version for 2019. They are reported to have made a few minor changes, though.

Here’s the thing
I’ve reviewed a lot of GTech vacuums, including the GTech power floor, AirRam K9 and Multi, so I was surprised when this new model came out in Feb 2018.
Surprised because this new cordless stick Pro vacuum has a bag! All of their other hoovers have been bagless. I’ll dig deeper into this in just a second…
Note: This bagged Pro version is still a cordless electric vacuum, but is claimed to be more hygienic.
But first, should you buy from GTech?
GTech is an English company with over 10,000 Google reviews and an average of 4.8 out of 5.
UPDATE 2019: GTech look to bring manufacturing of some products back to the UK! That’s a big win for the economy.
With all the brexit talks and on-going issues, this is more relevant now than ever.
They’ve done well and now rival Dyson and recently sponsored Channel 4’s Gogglebox.
No Risk: G-Tech are so confident you’ll love their product, they offer a 100% money back guarantee if you buy direct from them.
Note: There is a £10 fee to return any item. Make sure you keep all the original packaging.
Back to the Bag…
As I mentioned before, this new Pro model has a bag. So why the change? The main reasons are:
- To appeal to more people
- For a more hygienic clean (helping those with allergies)
- To help lower maintenance costs of filters
Not everyone likes bagless machines. They can be dusty, especially when emptying and look dirty with see through cylinders.
By only producing bagless vacuums, GTec were reducing the number of people who would buy their product.
Top Tip: You don’t need to throw each bag away after use. It’s quite easy to empty most of it and re-use. Just be careful the bag is still in good condition.
The pitch is that a bagged vacuum cleaner is more hygienic, which would be ideal for those suffering with allergies. When you vacuum your home, you want as much dust to go into the bin as possible.
Note: When you purchase this standard model, it only comes with 2 bags so I’d recommend purchasing a pack at the same time.
Which is better bagless or bagged vacuums?
Bagged vacuum cleaners require less maintenance because you don’t have to wash/replace filters as often (the dust is filtered by the bag).
But the bags usually have to be replaced when full. That’s something else to add to the shopping list!
Bagless vacuums are often messy to empty because the dirt/dust flies out when the dirt box is opened.
They also require more regular cleaning of the filters because the filters trap more dust.
So, the answer depends on your personal preferences in truth. There are pros and cons of both bagged and bagless vacuums.
GTech claim that their bagless GTech Pro lasts between 1 to 3 months before you need to change the bag. But this is completely dependent on how often you use it…
The bag has a 1.5 litre capacity.
How much are replacement vacuum bags?
You can buy replacement bags direct from GTech. £9.99 for 10, so about £1 each.
A quick side note…
Having been speaking with some people recently, we were discussing the pros and cons of upright vacuum cleaners and why they are less common than they used to be.
Two good reasons were due to the size of our homes and technological advances which have made vacuum cleaners like this Pro model possible.
I have reviewed some upright vacuums from Shark, but I also found a comprehensive guide to the best upright vacuums when doing some research which is worth checking out too.
Let’s take a look at some of the highlights of the new GTech Pro.
Quality
- Lightweight, only 2.4 kg
- Reputably British built
Usability
- Cordless and easy to use
- Equipped with multiple accessories
Trustworthiness
- 2 year guarantee
- Proven record in vacuums
Performance
- Powerful 22v, Lithium-ion battery
- 20 mins use from 4 hour charge
Is the GTech Pro any good?
As reported by Which?, the trend with GTech seems to be moving away from their original AirRam style vacuum, where the motor and dust container was in the head unit – the part on the floor.
The new design of the Pro and the Power Floor (bagless) mean that you get a larger dust container but also a more versatile vacuum.
You see, the Pro can be a handheld device or an upright vacuum. The tools and accessories can be combined in many combinations for pretty much every situation in your home or for outside areas too.
It’s cordless, too, so cleaning the car, conservatory or caravan is not a problem. And the power brush attachment is great for pet hair and stair cleaning.
Note: The power brush is a new attachment that was not included on other models in the past.
Shark vacuums have a similar attachment, specifically for pet hair. Maybe GTech were inspired…
The power brush (shown left) is ideal for stairs because the head has rollers just like the main head unit.
The only difference is the head is smaller so ideal for smaller areas, stairs and cars.
There is a helpful spotlight on the front to help you see any debris. I thought it might be a gimmick but it’s actually quite useful.
How does it perform…?
When using the GTech Pro, the first thing I noticed is that it feels quite light compared to your standard, larger vacuum.
This is probably by design, so not a complaint, and is ideal for moving easily around the home and upstairs.
I loved the way that you can use just the main unit on the stairs and to get into the nooks and crannies with the crevice tool and power brush.
Charging…
It’s something you are going to have to do quite often, as the Pro only lasts 20 mins on max mode and 40 mins on eco mode.
From my experience, most jobs can be done in eco mode so it gives you a good range around most medium sized homes.
To charge, simply plug-in the battery. You can do this while it’s attached to the main body or remove it.
The battery is small so takes up very little space. There is a handy light on the side showing you how many bars are charged.
The Big Problem…
When I put down some uncooked black turtle beans to vacuum up, the Pro did not perform well at all! Here’s how it looked:
All the beans rattled around the head unit and did not get sucked up. Maybe 10% of them were put into the bag. The rest would not go up.
I attempted this on eco and max modes. The result was the same.
If you regularly have larger, harder debris to vacuum up this might not be a good product for you.
Go for a larger, more powerful vacuum which has been designed for the job, such as the Shark Duo-Clean range.
Usability & Manoeuvrability
It’s very easy to move around, mainly because it’s lightweight.
One issue I have is that there are some soft plastic parts hanging down at the front of the head unit. I’m not sure of their purpose, but when you pull the vacuum back it judders on the floor most of the time.
Not a deal-breaker, but definitely something to consider.
Tools and Accessories
There is a good selection of tools included within the standard package which retails at £199.
However, one thing missing is the flexible power hose. This can be purchased separately for £50. Which brings the total up to £249.99.
2019 Update: It used to be the case that the GTech Pro K9 came as standard with the flexible power hose but that is not longer the case. You have to purchase it with both the GTech Pro standard and K9 versions.
That’s the exact same price as the GTech Pro K9…But without some of the extra key features, so if you are considering getting the power hose you might as well buy the K9.
More details on the power hose below…
What you Get
Here’s everything that’s included straight out of the box with the GTech Pro vacuum cleaner.
Note that the Flexible Power Hose is NOT included.
The power hose is a long, flexible hose which means you can use the power brush head and any attachment which needs power.
For example, you can reach a lot further using the power hose with the power brush.
This is ideal for cars and harder to reach places while still using just the lightweight main unit.
The Bags…
There is one already inside the unit and 1 spare. Just two bags is not going to last you very long, so I’d recommend purchasing more at the same time. They are not expensive. £9.99 for 10.
The charger is for a standard UK plug, so that’s a good thing.
I hate it when you buy a product in the UK which comes with a European or US plug attachment and you have to use an adaptor.
The Flexible Power Hose
Here’s how the power hose looks.
It’s actually a great idea and something which is very handy to use. Shame you have to pay an extra £50 for it.
It does not come as standard with the accessories included.
What are people saying..?
From those who have used it, we have heard only positives.
Most like it because it has all the accessories included which allow it to be used as an upright and a hand-held vacuum.
Note: The flexible power hose does NOT come as standard.
Others really like the hygiene of the bag because they suffer from dust allergies.
For most the fact that it’s cordless really helps them get the vacuuming done faster and makes it more convenient to quickly suck up bits on the floor.

So, What’s the Downside?
For some with larger homes or who do a lot of vacuuming, 20 mins run time might not be long enough.
However, there is an option to get up to 40 mins run time by switching to “eco” mode. This is a button on the front of the machine. It reduces suction power but gives you twice the run time.
In testing, the eco mode was suitable for most jobs on hard floor and carpet.
Compare all GTech Vacuums
I’ve written another post where I compare all 5 of the GTech Vacuums which are available in 2018. Check that out if you’re not sure which one is right for you.
Some people want to compare the G Tech Power Floor vs dyson. This is a legitimate question, but in truth quite hard to answer as there is a degree of personal taste involved.
Both the gtech and dyson options are very good. They’re powerful and do an excellent job. There isn’t a huge difference between them in terms of performance, so it comes down to price and style.
Which do you prefer the look of, the Dyson or the GTech Pro?
Advantages
- Uses a bag for extra hygiene
- Weighs only 2.4kg
- Upright and hand-held machine
- Eco mode for twice the run time
- Lots of accessories
- Great for car, stairs and the elderly
Disadvantages
- Similar to other GTech machines apart from the new bag
The bottom line…
If you want a lightweight, cordless vacuum, which gives you choice of an upright or hand held vacuuming option, this is a great choice.
This bagged version gives you a more hygienic clean and reduces dust, but if you prefer a bagless version I would recommend the Power Floor K9.
