The GTech Lawnmower Battle: 2.0 vs CLM50

GTech already had a pretty perfect product in their previous mower, which is why they received a 9.2 rating in my review. And they were smart enough to know that if you’ve got something perfect, you shouldn’t mess with it.

The new CLM50 version doesn’t have any of the core features removed, but is built with the latest technology available. This ensures a much more powerful performance, better durability, and a longer lifespan.

Besides that, the new lawnmower has a white finish which gives it that elegant feel and looks much better out in the garden sunlight.

But the main performance-related improvement comes in the blades. They feature the latest omniblade cutting technology that ensures you always get the power you need.

Battery-powered lawnmowers have long been thought to be inferior to petrol or corded electric ones, but with technological developments such as this one, the difference has become almost unnoticeable, especially for average home users. 

The intelligent blade runs at 2,800 rpm, but if it senses extra thick grass, it increases the rpm to 3,500, making sure it can cut through anything that comes up against it!

Now that we got the differences out of the way, let’s see what makes the lawnmower one of GTech’s best-selling products.

Lightweight and compact design

For homeowners, one of the most important considerations when getting a lawnmower is how easy it is to use and store. The GTech Lawnmower CLM50 is one of the best on the market in that regard.

Weighing only 13.5kg and having large wheels, the mower is very easy to move around any curves in your garden. 

It’s also very easy to start – set the battery, push the activation button, and pull the lever. That’s it! 

And once you’re done mowing, you’ll be glad to know that the mower can fold to a very compact size. It won’t take up much storage space in your shed, and getting it in and out will be a breeze.

Adjustable cutting height

In order to have full control over the finish of your lawn, adjusting the cutting height is essential.

The height lever is very easy to use on the new Gtech CLM50 Lawnmower and is placed right next to the main handle for quick changes.

There are 5 different increments of 10mm, ranging from 30mm to 80mm. So, no matter the occasion, you will have a setting for whatever you need, from a quick tidy up to the first cut of the season.

Top Tip: Always start with a taller cutting height and work your way down gradually, otherwise you risk cutting back to the dirt if you have an uneven lawn

50L grass bin

Let’s be honest – emptying the grass bin is by far the least enjoyable task of garden work and can be a bit frustrating if you have to do it too often.

Top Tip: Get a compact compost bin (UK made) and enjoy naturally made compost all year round for your garden.

That’s why GTech have made their grass bin as big as they can, at 50L. With fewer stops to empty out the bin, you can finish the job much more quickly and without tiring yourself out.

The 50L grass bin also has a handy indicator flap that will let you know when the bag is full and needs emptying, a handy feature that ensures you don’t have to wonder and stop to check the bin.

Generous cutting width

With a 420mm cutting width, you won’t need too many passes on your lawn to finish the job.

This comes in very handy for older people that don’t wish to spend too much time and need a quick mowing job.

The blades also extend to the width of the wheels so you don’t miss bits or have to hang your wheels over the edge of the garden to get every last piece.

Battery-powered

The best thing about having a battery-powered lawnmower is that there is no cable to worry about. You can roam free around your garden with no restrictions, and best of all, no petrol fumes either!

The CLM50 uses a 48V Lithium-ion battery, that can provide up to 40 minutes of run time. Once the battery is empty, you’ll be glad to know that it only takes one hour for a full charge. 

So even if you run out of battery during mowing, you can quickly recharge it while you take a tea break.

Is it Suitable for You..?

The CLM50 lawnmower is designed for small to medium-sized gardens, so if that sounds like you, then the GTech CLM50 is a fantastic option to buy!

It’s incredibly easy to use, and with such a lightweight design, even the elderly can use it. Once you’re done, storing the mower doesn’t take that much space, so even if you have limited storage space, it’s still a good option.

It’s also petrol free and quiet so there are no horrible fumes to worry about! But, for larger gardens with a lot of overgrown grass, you might be better suited with one of these alternatives.

To be fair, the previous version, the GTech HT3.0, was exceptionally good. I even gave it a 9.1 rating in my review.

But GTech wouldn’t release a new version if they weren’t confident that it outperforms the old one. Let’s see how they compare.

GTech Hedge Trimmer HT50 vs HT3.0

I’m glad to see that all the core features that deserved my 9.1 rating, and almost 4,000 5-star reviews, are still present in the new version. 

I’m talking about the improved durability of the blade, the long run time, and the interchangeable battery. But more on these later!

At first glance, the obvious change is the colour finish. Just like the other products from their updated line (Lawn Mower and Grass Trimmer), this one also has a white finish which I’m personally a big fan of. 

It looks much better in the garden and has that elegant feel to it.

However, the key improvement over the previous model is in the ability to cut thicker branches. The HT50 model has a 25mm blade cutting width, which means it can cut branches up to 2.5cm in diameter with ease.

The length of the blade is also almost 50% longer than the previous model, which means you can cut more of your branches with fewer cuts. This in turn allows you to finish the job faster and enjoy more free time.

Now that we know all the differences between the two versions, let’s see all the other details of the GTech HT50 Hedge Trimmer.

Long 10ft reach

All of GTech’s hedge trimmers have been so popular largely because of their long-reach handle. It reaches up to 10 feet (3 metres in new money…), allowing you to reach even at the top of tall hedgerows.

Note: The pole is not telescopic, nor does it extend. It’s a fixed pole which, with the length of the cutting head, allows you to reach up to 10 feet with it for all those hard to reach places.

For even better control over the hedge cut, you can adjust the head to rotate 135°.

And with it being so lightweight, most people will be able to use it at the full length of intended use.

Lightweight and practical

The GTech HT50 Hedge Trimmer was designed with balance and ergonomics in mind. The weight is equally distributed throughout the trimmer, ensuring none of your body parts tire too much.

Weighing only 2.94kg, you can move it around your garden with ease without feeling anchored down. Even better, it comes with a safety harness that you can use to support the trimmer on your shoulder for a much greater balance.

Long runtime

With a full charge, which takes only 4 hours, you can get a 60-minute runtime. 60 minutes is on the upper limit of the average hedge trimmer runtime, so I’m glad to see GTech have managed to achieve this. You can get plenty of tasks done in your garden in an hour.

To monitor the status of your battery, you can press the button on the top and the LED indicator will lit up showing how much “juice” you have left. That way, you will never be caught off-guard with an empty trimmer.

Interchangeable battery

The best part about modern cordless tools is that they can use the same battery on many different tools. The 18V lithium-ion battery that comes with the HT50 can also be used with GTech’s cordless grass trimmer.

This option allows you to save money by purchasing just the unit, or have a spare battery at all times so you can increase your runtime by 100%.

Improved blade

As I mentioned earlier, the blade is the main improvement over the previous version. GTech have already built their blade to be extremely durable and high-quality, so it’s good to see they’ve kept the same blade.

However, they improved two key components of it. It has a cutting length of 51cm and a cutting width of 2.5cm. This is great news, especially if you have thicker branches in your garden.

Other cordless hedge trimmers don’t usually go above 2cm cutting width, so this feels like a major improvement and a step in the right direction for all cordless hedge trimmers.

If you’re an occasional DIY gardener and keep on top of your hedges, it’s hard to see a better option than the GTech HT50 Hedge Trimmer.

It’s lightweight, versatile, and cuts through branches with ease. And don’t forget that it’s cordless too, so it means you can carry it with you without any hassling with cords or mixing petrol. 

But if your yard is full of thick and dense hedges that haven’t been cut in a while, you might be better suited with a more powerful machine. Check out our alternatives for more options.

Easy to use

Just like the assembly process, which we described above, the operation of this lawn mower is extremely easy. Just assemble it in a few quick steps, and take it out to the lawn.

The Gtech Small Lawn Mower weighs only 2.5 kg, or 3.5 kg when assembled with the battery and the pole. This makes it one of the lightest lawn mowers ever.

With such a lightweight design, even elderly people can use it regularly without tiring themselves too much. And it also motivates you to mow more frequently since it makes it such an easy task.

I must compliment the GTech SLM50 for its clever design. The cutting wheel is right in the center of the base, so it can reach each side of the mower, allowing you to get close cuts to your wall and other edges.

It also has an adjustable height mechanism that goes from 40 mm to 50 mm. The blades are made from carbon steel and have a 5200 RPM constant speed.

There are plenty of safety features as well to avoid any potential accidents – one safety key that must be in the “on” position, a safety switch that needs to be pressed to start, and the “auto-off” lock that activates when the handle is raised.

The G Tech SLM50 was just recently launched, so there aren’t plenty of opinions about it online yet. But the first impressions seem to be encouraging.

People who already bought this product seem to love the ease of use and that they finally have the perfect solution for their small yards.

What’s the Downside…?

Judging by the first impressions, the only complaint people have right now is that it’s not suited for their larger lawns. But GTech don’t advertise it as a solution for larger lawns, so this one is more about the misunderstanding rather than the mower itself.

The SLM50 seemed a good idea as it utilised the batteries from HT50 and the GT50 which I’m very happy with. The SLM50, however, was far too small for my needs so I returned this and bought the CLM50 which seems to be far more practical. – George S.

Is it Suitable for You..?

To avoid any misunderstandings like the gentleman who bought this for his large lawn, we must note again that this lawn mower is meant as a “mini” version and designed for smaller lawns. That’s why it doesn’t feature a grass box.

So, if you have a small to medium-sized lawn and will keep a regular cutting schedule, it’s really hard to see past the SLM50. It’s extremely lightweight, easy to use, and doesn’t require power cords.

Plus, if you already own a grass or hedge trimmer from GTech, you can get incredible savings compared to getting an entire lawn mower.

Enhanced Battery

In other models, such as the GTech Pro 2, the battery was a 22 Volt one. With the AirFOX, it’s now got a 37 Volt one. So you’re getting a significant amount more power delivery. One downside is that it takes longer to charge, but the difference is only from 4 to 5 hours. Most people aren’t going to notice the extra hour required so it’s not really an issue as I see it.

The power output now is around 450 Watts which is pretty powerful. But do you need more power?

The truth is, power doesn’t equate to pick-up…Meaning, just because you have more power output, it doesn’t mean the vacuum will suck up more dust from your floors. It depends on a lot of other factors, too. Obviously power is one, but so is efficiency of the machine, how it’s been designed, etc.

Back in 2017 there was a ban on vacuum cleaners being over 900 Watts.

From personal use, it certainly feels more powerful when using it compared to the GTech Pro 2 which I use almost daily. You can clearly see the amount of dust and debris that it picks up from carpets inside of the bagless cylinder. Granted, it’s not possible to see inside the bag of the GTech Pro 2 but when I empty it out there doesn’t appear to be the same level of dust from relatively clean carpets.

3 Power Modes = 80 Min Run Time

The AirFOX has three modes

Eco –  As is implied by the name, should be the most economical in terms of power usage so will last the longest. If you have mainly hard floors and nothing too major to pick-up then this mode should be sufficient for most of your needs

Auto –  This mode will automatically adjust the suction power based on what the machine thinks it needs. If you are going on carpet, the suction and power will increase. On hard floors, it will be lower. This is the middle ground setting for using as much as is needed. You’ll get less runtime, but the power will boost when required for those harder parts to clean.

Max – If you have some stubborn hair or dust squashed into your carpet or chair, this mode can help you. It’s also good when you have dust and debris sitting awkwardly down behind a radiator pipe or in a crack which won’t come out on the lower power setting modes. As you’d expect, the battery will not last anywhere near as long in this mode. They say around 15 minutes from a full charge.

Bags, Accessories & Looks…

This particular model is a bagless machine, so no need to worry about bag replacements. It’s easy to empty the cylinder out, but also clean the filters. Check out the video below on exactly how to do that.

In terms of accessories, you get a whole host of them with this machine. Apart from the kind of obvious and ubiquitous crevice tool and upholstery head, there are two key ones I’d like to mention.

1 – Powered Brush Head

This is a really handy extra head that is perfect for cleaning the stairs and your car seats. It has a powered brush bar, just like the main head unit but it’s smaller so easy to use on smaller items and in smaller spaces.

2 – Flexible Hose

Sometimes you find you need to get into harder to each places with the crevice tool, like down the sides of sofas or your car seats. That’s where the flexible hose comes in. What makes it nice is that the hose is super lightweight so you’re not having to try and hold 3kg above your head. You can easily place the vacuum down and then extend the hose into the place you need to get to.

Features people love are how quiet it is and that it’s very easy very portable. The build quality is also noted by some users, especially those who were previous GTech AirRam purchasers.

What’s the Downside…?

One downside noted is how it’s not the best to balance it when not in use. The battery, waste cylinder and main unit are sitting right at the top so leaning it against the wall it very easily can slide down. I mention this in my video. To be honest, it’s the same story with some of the other machines such as the GTech Pro 2 which I also have. I’ve lost count the number of times that the machine has slipped down after standing it up against something.

Now, I don’t lean it against the wall. I put it down on the floor, sofa, bed or lean it right over against a chair so it can’t fall down.

Is it Suitable for You..?

If you’re looking for a vacuum cleaner which works well on both hard floors and carpets, this is a good choice. It looks good, it’s compact and portable. You don’t need to plug it in anywhere, and you can adjust the power so it runs for a long time or goes all out for maximum cleaning effectiveness with a shorter run time.

If you have a massive house, you might run out of charge before you’ve finished vacuuming but for most of us it’s more than adequate to finish the whole house or apartment. The key thing to remember is to get it charged between uses. You have the handy digital display which shows you how much charge you have left so it’s easy to know when you need to plug it in.

Let’s take a look at the two main types and when to use them

Fasteners are the most crucial part of many home and business projects. Without them, things would fall apart – quite literally. But there are several different types of fasteners, and you might not know which one is best to use for which scenario.

There is one type of fastener known as a socket screw. Before you know whether or not to use them, it helps to know the different types and what they bring to your next project.

What are Socket Screws?

These screws go by a few different names but socket screws are for applications where a nut and bolt just won’t do. The most easily identifiable feature of socket screws is the hex head, which can be adapted to suit a countersink, button, or fillister head, among others.

While nuts and bolts may be preferable for heavy-duty applications, there are times when the space does not allow for it. If you don’t have the proper space to tighten a nut and bolt, then the socket screw is the next best thing and will do a great job.

The Two Main Types of Socket Screws

While there are several subsets of the socket screw, there are really two main types that you’ll see for your everyday projects. Those would be the button head socket screw and the countersunk socket screw. Let’s get a little further into each of them.

Button Head Socket Screw

This is the most common type of socket screw and it is easy to identify because of the round or dome head that identifies them. Of course, you can also look for the hex head as well. Button head socket screws are manufactured with a slightly rounded, smooth dome for a head. They tend to be a bit more bulbous and larger than your average cap screw.

Because of its shape, the button head socket screw can typically handle larger gauges of hex driver, which means that greater torque can be achieved in the process. Smaller hex button screws, however, should not be tightened with quite as much force.

Countersunk Socket Screws

The other common type of socket screw is the countersunk hex. You might see these called the flat head socket or simply flat socket screws. These are generally used in applications where the screw needs to sit flush or just below the surface of the material in question.

These screws generally have a roughly 82-degree angle sloping shoulder design. The purpose of this is to allow the screw to make its way just below the surface when applying them to pre-drilled holes. These come in a huge array of widths and lengths, giving them great versatility.

What are the Main Advantages of Socket Screws?

The single most important benefit of using socket screws is the improved clamping force and torque that they provide. Compared to regular screws, socket screws deliver a substantial amount of force that applies to more heavy-duty applications. That improved torque is crucial for holding workpieces together that normal screws could not accommodate.

Depending on what material type you choose, you may be able to keep hardware costs down as well. Most jobs hinge on the budget and being able to save on hardware can wind up making a difference elsewhere.

Finally, there is the weight of these screws to consider. If you are working on a project where weight plays a role, socket screws are going to be your preferred option. They have a slightly lower weight than other fasteners, making them more ideal where a difference of even a few ounces can wind up making a big impact on the project.

To be honest, it’s really hard to find a downside to this product, which is a rare thing to happen. The only thing that could be considered a ‘negative’, is that it needs to be placed near a plug, but most people have many plugs in their home so it’s not much of a problem.

I made the mistake of setting it up away from a plug, you should plug in the cable first so you know how far away to set up the bed. Though all in all, it took about 20 mins to unpack and set up, so it’s not that big of a deal.
