The GTech Lightweight Hedge Trimmer (LHT50)
GTech have released many versions of their best selling hedge trimmer. In this new model, they’ve listened to user feedback and made one which is lighter and easier to handle
The best selling GTech HT50 hedge trimmer has been around for years, but new for 2023 is this GTech LHT50 model. It’s similar to the HT50, but the biggest difference is the weight (almost 1kg less) and length of the blade (22cm shorter).
With a high rating of 8.75 due to it’s lightweight easy-to-use design, it’s the perfect hedge trimmer for light gardening work and those who struggle with heavier machines. Costing around £180 (use the discount code below), it’s not the cheapest but it’s good value for money compared to the competition.
Here’s a sneak peak at the LHT50

OK, let’s get started…
GTech have been a key player in the UK cordless garden power tools market for some time now and we’ve tried and tested many of their products here at Garden Power Tools.
What does their latest product have to offer? The main thing is the weight compared to other models and especially the HT50. User feedback on the HT50 hedge trimmer was good, but some found it a bit heavy and unbalanced. Especially older or weaker users.
Let’s be honest, the GTech tools are not designed for heavy duty use or to plough through thick bushes. They’re designed for light use, often just to trim bushes, shrubs and small gardens. So it makes sense for the machine to be smaller and more compact.
Key Features
Let’s start by looking at the key features at a glance:
KEY FEATURES
- Lightweight at only 2.1kg, so doesn’t cause fatigue or strain
- Cordless operation, so you can move around easily with no cords
- Diamond ground blades for precision, smooth cuts and blades that last
- Adjustable head angle, making hedge tops easy to tackle
Shorter Cutting Blade
Longer is not always better…In this case, the short blade reduces weight and makes handling it a hell of a lot easier compared to other long blade options.
The blade length is 31cm, so it looks a little stubby but it still has a long pole (144cm) so you can get to those high up places when needed.
For those with weaker wrists or arms, it will be much easier to manoeuvre around small bushes. It also means you’re less likely to fatigue as quickly, and just as well because the battery can last up to 60 minutes.
The blades are diamond-ground and dual action so it’ll have no problem staying sharp and smoothly cutting through twigs up to 1.4cm in diameter.
The result should be an easy to use, easy to store hedge trimmer which is ideally suited for small to medium sized gardens which are in reasonably good condition and just need that extra trim every now and then.
The Bottom Line: If you need to reach really tall areas, you will need a ladder or a different machine with a long blade. The LHT50 is designed for smaller, lighter work
Adjustable Cutting Angle
Worried about reaching the tops of those hedges? You needn’t be. With this trimmer, you can angle the head to the required angle so that you
can take care of whatever style hedge or bush you have.
Just be careful not to dive into areas where there might be branches which are thicker than 14mm (1.4cm) because it could block the blades, which does happen from time to time if you are not careful.
If you think you might hit some thicker stuff, you’re either better off with a more powerful machine or getting the branch cutter additional head which is for the GTech HT50 only (NOT the LHT50).
The Bottom Line: The cutting angle adjustment is very handy for getting around different shape hedges and bushes, so it’s a positive feature and one we liked using.

What are People Saying…?
As a new product, user feedback is still being collected. However, from our experience and from those we have spoken to, this new lightweight model hedge trimmer is aimed at those who want a smaller and lighter tool because they were struggling with larger machines.
The performance is good, but nothing compared to a powerful petrol machine. Obviously you can’t compare the two. This one is perfect for the elderly who want to keep on top of their garden between bigger jobs done by a gardener or family member.
What’s the Downside…?
The only downside is that the blades are not designed to deal with larger twigs and branches so can easily get stuck if you are trying to tackle something like that.
Advantages
- Lightweight (2kg)
- Easy to use and store
- Low maintenance
Disadvantages
- Larger twigs get stuck in blade
Is it Suitable for You..?
Perfect for those smaller jobs in an already under control garden. Ideal for older people who want to continue gardening chores, but without the strength to use heavy machinery. Quiet and easy to get out and put away, with the easy to charge battery which comes off without a problem so anyone can use it.
Alternatives Options
We previously reviewed the GTech HT50 and the predecessors to that model, too. There are other options out there but we haven’t tested anything which a short blade and as lightweight as this model yet.
The bottom line…
This is a great piece of kit if you’re in the market for a lightweight hedge trimmer for light work around the garden, trimming bushes and hedgerows which do not have larger branches to tackle. And, if you’ve been struggling with a larger machine, this could be a good compromise so you can continue working but without the stress and strain of a heavier, longer bladed machine.
