This Webb push rear roller mower looks and feels great and it could be described as vintage, but the design hasn’t changed much since the original designs so it is a true classic. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it…
Quality– Traditional design, built to last – 5 bladed hardened steel cylinder | Usability– Lightweight and easy to manoeuvre – Easy to push and has plastic roller | ||
Robustness– 24 month warranty – Hardened steel and low maintenance | Performance– Delivers a crisp, clean cut – 30cm cutting width and adjustable cut height |
This traditional style lawn mower is still around for a reason. It works. Webb have changed the mower to be made mostly out of plastic for the casing, so as to reduce the weight but it also means you don’t get rust on the body. The blades are made of hardened steel which does a great job of cutting the lawn to a give a beautiful finish. It’s basic, and here are the main features:
- 30cm cutting width
- 12kg in weight
- 18 litre grass box
- Adjustable cutting heights, from 13-23.5mm
What Users Say
Users who bought this mower for its intended purpose, which is to cut a lawn which is already reasonably well maintained and not a jungle, found that it works very well. The finish experienced by these users was much better quality than a normal mower because of the effectiveness of the cylinder and blade.
The finish is so good that some even cut their grass with an electric or petrol mower first, then finish it off with a low cut setting using this push mower from Webb. It leaves nice stripes in the lawn produced partly by the cut and cemented by the rear roller, which is a nice touch when you are looking for that aesthetically pleasing finish to your lawn.
Those users who found it difficult to use generally didn’t understand that this mower is not intended to cut through long, unkempt grassy areas, where there are lots of twigs and debris.
Some found that the grass box was a little flimsy because it is a flexible bag rather than a hard plastic box, but think this is a minor issue that only a few people found to be the case.
Advantages
- Classic, traditional design which is simple to use and low maintenance
- Environmentally friendly
- Great finish, producing stripes and has a rear roller
- No tools required for normal operation
Disadvantages
- Grass collection bag is flimsy and could rip easily
What We Say
As we said in a previous review, we love push lawn mowers. They are great for a workout, eco friendly and produce a great finish to your lawn. This classic looking product from Webb delivers on the cut, producing a crisp and clean slice through the grass and leaving a nice stripe assisted by the rear roller on this model. But don’t worry, it’s still light because it’s mainly made from plastic so weighs in at only 12kg.
The hardened steel means that it should last a long time and require very little maintenance over the years. You just keep assign it a small space in your shed and bring it out when you need it without worrying about plugging in extension cables, getting petrol or if it will even start again after a winter of no use.
Having said that, what this mower is not intended for is large areas of long, unruly grass with debris popping out of every blade of grass. The intended user for this mower is someone who takes great care and pride in their garden and wants a beautiful finish. If you are not out in the garden during the growing season at least once a week cutting the grass this probably won’t work for you because the grass will be too long so this manual mower will get jammed, slide around and rip your grass out! In this case you should be looking at corded electric, cordless electric or petrol mowers because they are much more suited to that kind of job.
Is it Right for you?
As I mentioned briefly above, this push mower (in fact, all push mowers) is suitable only for those who have a very well kept lawn to start with. Many have a push lawn mower to add a finishing touch to their lawn which other kinds of lawnmower cannot deliver. The look of the grass after using a manual, cylinder machine like this one is different to that of an automatic, powered machine. It looks of higher quality and is more precise.
It could be that you want to be more environmentally friendly and get one but if your lawn is really overgrown this isn’t going to do the job. In that case you should look at getting a strimmer to cut it down first and use this mower afterwards on the more reasonably sized blades of grass that are manageable for this push mower.
