Before this 3.0 version, GTech had an incredibly popular model called the HT20.

This new, upgraded version is similar in design and functionality but with some major improvements.

We’ll look at those as we go through the post.

More Durable Blade

All too often products aren’t made to last nowadays, so it’s refreshing to see a company invest in better quality parts.

A stronger, upgraded blade will mean fewer issues with bending when hitting larger than expected stems and branches.

Only extended use of the product will tell if they have delivered on this, but it looks and feels much better compared to the previous version.

Longer Run Time

Imagine running out of battery mid way through trimming your hedge. Very annoying.

The previous version, and many other hedge trimmers in this price range, only last up to 45 mins.

This new model now lasts 60 mins from a 4 hour charge. That’s 33% longer. A massive help to most and an impressive run time figure from such a lightweight hedge trimmer.

Interchangeable Battery Pack

In order to make it easier (and cheaper) for you to use more of their garden tools range, GTech have been smart and adapted the battery so it works with their grass trimmer.

In theory, if you only have a small garden, you could use just 1 battery between the two products.

Or, more likely, you can do a larger job by purchasing both products and using both batteries for hedge trimming or grass trimming.

What are People Saying…?

There are now almost 900 reviews for this GTech hedge trimmer, with an average rating of 4.6 out of 5.

That’s a very good rating and shows that people think highly of it. The biggest positives people mention are how light it is and how easy it is to use.

What’s the Downside…?

The new model has a slightly higher price tag. The HT20 was £124.99. This model is £199.99, which seems pretty punchy.

With that being said, you are getting a hedge trimmer which will cut your hedgerows for years to come and additional features for durability and usability as mentioned already.

Is it Suitable for You..?

If you’re an occasional gardener, with a small to medium sized garden, this hedge trimmer is a very compact, lightweight and versatile option.

It’s perfect for those who don’t want a heavy, hard to handle petrol machine. And being completely cord free means it’s super easy to move around.

Lightweight and easy to use on tall hedgerows. Reaches up to 10ft.

It’s one of the lightest machines out there, so good for the elderly and anyone with weaker arms.

Note: It’s not suitable for very thick, dense hedges which are not maintained at all. It’s designed for normal hedges which are maintained semi-regularly.

Top Tip: Go and measure the thickness of the stems in the hedges you want to trim. They need to be less than 15mm in thickness.

The bottom line…

This GTech hedge trimmer is a fantastic, lightweight, space saving, super portable tool for medium sized gardens.

It will get the job done quickly and effectively, but is not suitable for industrial or heavy duty jobs.

Who are GTech?

They’re a British company with a good record of creating cordless, electric garden tools and vacuum cleaners.

They are known as a competitor to Dyson, and recently became a household name by sponsoring Channel 4’s Gogglebox. GTech (Grey Technologies) was created by Nick Grey, a British inventor.

Why Buy Cordless from GTech?

G-Tech are really taking the cordless electric range of power tools to the next level. Launched in the Spring of 2016, this cordless hedge trimmer adds to an impressive line up of garden power tools.

Update: This GTech HT20 model is still one of the best hedge trimmers on the market. If you’re looking for a new one for 2019 you can rest assured that it lasts.

It’s reassuring that not many changes have had to be made to the product because it lasts and does the job. Customers love it, overall.

Lithium-Ion Battery

It’s a cordless tool so it’s powered by battery. The lithium-ion battery lasts for 45 minutes from a 4 hour charge. Spare batteries are available which are interchangeable with the GTech ST20 grass trimmer. Bonus!

Adjustable Long Reach Hedge Trimmer

It’s incredibly easy to use due to its lightweight (2.25kg) build, ergonomic design and adjustable head angle. You can use it to trim high hedge tops, bushes and everything in-between. Ideal if you don’t like step ladders.

The angle of the head adjusts through a range of 135º meaning it’ll cut straight hedge tops when you’re standing on the ground.

The blade length is 31.5cm (315mm). Replacement parts are available direct from GTech should you need them.

Branch Cutter Head (optional extra)

The standard precision blades do a fantastic job of cutting through stems of up to 15mm thick, so it’s suitable for most hedges. However, if you want to cut something a little thicker you can use the optional branch cutter (sold separately). Simply detach the head and attach the branch cutter and away you go.

The branch cutter head cuts up to 6cm (60mm) in diameter branches.

Extension Pole (optional extra)

The long reach of the HT20 can be made even longer with this extension pole. It’s an optional extra, so will cost you around £40, but if you have long hedges or really don’t like step ladders this could be a good choice.

This will allow you to reach an extra 50cm higher.

The Best Time to Buy…

If you’re looking for a good deal, a good time to buy is Spring. By summer, companies know that you need a hedge trimmer so the prices are usually higher.

GTech often have Spring deals to get their sales up early and you get a saving. Win-win!

I’d recommend checking out the GTech site to see if they have any offers on. If they do, and you feel this cordless hedge trimmer is for you, it’s worth purchasing now before the prices go back to normal.

Having said that, the price doesn’t fluctuate too much. Only be around £10 because it’s already a great value item.

So, What’s the Downside?

Some users have said that it is awkward to use and perhaps a little heavy. It’s a personal thing. The fact is, it only weighs 2.25kg so is very light for a hedge trimming tool.

For a hedge trimmer that costs £129, it cannot be compared to one which costs £400.

If you need to cut through thicker branches, the optional branch cutter head attachment is an excellent addition.

Not Sure if it’s Right for you?

Whether you decide to buy the GTech hedge cutter or not is entirely up to you. I am here only to give you a little guidance.

Note: If you have very large hedgerows to tackle this might not be your best option. Check out the specifications section on the GTech site and really think if it’s suitable for you.

It is designed for small to medium sized hedgerows, not for jobs which take hours to do.

The bottom line…

If you want an efficient, cordless electric hedge trimmer to cut a range of hedges in your garden for up to 45 mins at a time, this GTech HT20 model is for you.

If you need it for use on a more industrial scale with overgrown bushes that have thick branches and stems, you’re better off with a sturdier machine like a petrol powered one.

Telescopic Shaft

When you need increasing reach and leverage, with other trimmers you will have to use a ladder. Forget about that. This trimmer has a built-in extending shaft made form high-quality aluminium, which makes it strong while keeping the weight to a minimum.

It can extend the reach for up to 2 meters and has a locking lever to hold the pole securely in place.

Sturdy Blades

Laser cut  51 cm dual action blades give you plenty of length and strength for an even cut.

This double action mechanism reduces vibrations and cuts branches evenly from both sides, which eliminates bark peel and gives your plants a healthier cut.

The 18mm cutting capacity handles larger shrubs with ease.

A red steel support makes it easier to see the blades when they are obscured by plants or branches.

Ergonomic Design

This tool is meant to be used comfortably for extended periods of time. You see, the problem with gas-powered trimmers is that that they use a mixture of gasoline and oil. If you don’t use the correct ratio, the engine will sputter and vibrate.

Even if you do get the right proportions, you still need to make sure you use the gas in a certain amount of time. Gasoline has volatile components that tend to evaporate over time. This makes it burn less efficiently and your trimmer won’t run very well, also causing the unit to vibrate when you use it.

Using a rechargeable battery eliminates almost all the vibrations. The rubber coated forearm support will reduce vibrations even further, so you can rest assured that your hands will not feel numb after using this tool.

Without beating around the bush (pun intended…), the HT20 is heavier, shorter and more expensive than the HT05.

So why would you consider buying the HT20…?

Well, the HT20 is more powerful, sturdier, can cut through thicker stems and has an optional branch cutter attachment that you can switch to for branch cutting duties.

By comparison…

The HT05 is lighter and comes equipped with a telescopic shaft so that you can extend it up to 1.7m in length. It’s not as powerful, but lasts the same time as the HT20 from a shorter charge time.

Here’s what you need to know…

Buy the HT20 Hedge Trimmer if…

You want to cut thicker bushes and hedges and therefore need a little more power with the potential for branch cutting (up to 40mm branches if you buy the optional branch cutter extension).

And if you don’t have very high hedgerows or don’t mind jumping up a ladder to trim them.

Buy the HT05 Plus Hedge Trimmer if…

You are elderly or weaker and want the lightest hedge trimmer possible but still need a long reach tool so you don’t have to get up any ladders.

It only cuts up to 12mm thick stems, whereas the HT20 cuts up to 15mm.

The Bottom Line…

The HT05 Plus is longer, lighter and more easily adjustable than the HT20 but with less power and no branch cutter option.

Listen up, Users Speak the Truth…

This trimmer from Bosch gets rave reviews from those who own it and use it in their gardens. People love that it’s large so makes short work of a job that would normally take a long time with a smaller, less powerful hedge cutter.

Some users buy it because they have large amounts of hedge to trim which it races through without a problem. Others purchase this model because they like the larger than normal tooth opening which allows them to trim larger branches.

There really are no valid complaints about this product. The only thing to note is if you are upgrading from one trimmer to this one solely because of the blade length, be careful because different manufacturers can measure the blade length from different points. Just something to note.

Having used many Bosch produced power tools over many years I don’t hesitate to recommend a Bosch made tool, usually without even having used it! The reason for this confidence is that they always deliver. They have a good reputation and know that in order to keep it they can’t release poor quality products.

This Bosch AHS 50-16 electric model is a super little product. It’s lightweight, well balanced and also very affordable. For under £60 you can’t really go far wrong.

The 16mm too opening means that it is suitable for home hedges that are not too large with thick branches everywhere. It will cut through branches up to around 15 mm but anything over that may cause problems for it. With a blade length of 50 cm you are getting a reasonably sized cut length without having to handle a long blade which can be hard work and tiresome.

The 450w motor is adequate for its intended purpose and will ensure a clean cut even through a thick set of leaves and twigs, but anything too thick and jungle like and you may wish you’d gone for a more powerful model.
