OK, let’s get started…

The GTech grass trimmer line has come a long way. It all started with the original GTech ST20 Strimmer, then it was updated to the GT 3.0 version, later to the GT 4.0 version, and now the GT50 has been released.

The old versions are no longer sold by GTech, but they can be found through other retailers like Amazon and Argos.

Honestly, the main improvements happened between the first two updates, with GTech greatly improving the battery and the overall design to achieve better usability.

The main changes happening in the latest update feature a different colour and feel, and a slight update to all the little electronics that go into the device.

Gtech GT50 Colour Update
The latest colour update helps it look fresher

GTech seems to be switching to a polar white finish to all their latest products, the example being their latest lawnmower (check review here), and to be frank, I think it’s much better this way. The white finish provides that elegant feeling and looks much better around a green lawn.

Let’s take a look now at all the other features and see what makes this trimmer one of the best on the market.

KEY FEATURES

  • Versatility
  • Lightweight and easy to use
  • 18v lithium-ion battery
  • Plastic blades

Versatility

Versatility
Trim edges on the lawn easily

In order to get the perfect finish to your lawn, you’ll need to trim the edges so there’s a neat line between the lawn and any paving or flower bed. The GTech GT50 grass trimmer can do that with ease!

All you need to do is simply swivel the cutting head and you can turn the grass trimmer into an edge trimmer. It’s extremely precise and will definitely improve the overall look of your garden.

It’s these small touches that really make a big aesthetic difference to the appearance of you lawn.

Lightweight and easy to use

Lightweight and easy to use

Most GTech products are aimed at DIY gardeners, and this one is no exception. The fact that it weighs only 1.85kg is great news for anyone looking for an easy-to-use solution.

It allows you to do the job more quickly and without tiring yourself out with arm ache.

The design even further improves the usability thanks to the ergonomic handle, which I must say, feels very good in your hand and is an improvement over the latest version.

The handle ensures that your shoulders and neck don’t take all the stress, giving you the freedom to move around your garden with ease.

18v lithium-ion battery

18v lithium-ion battery

The cordless grass trimmer is powered by an 18V lithium-ion battery. It takes 4 hours to fully charge it, and it provides 30 minutes of run time

30 minutes might not seem like much, but considering how lightweight and easy to use this trimmer is, it should be just enough for small to medium-sized gardens.

There’s also a very handy battery indicator that tells you how much charge you have left, so you won’t be caught off guard when the trimmer stops working.

Plastic blades

Plastic blades

Gone are the days of tangled trimming strings and spools. GTech have come up with an ingenious solution to this problem by making their trimmer with plastic blades.

They are very easy to fit into the trimmer and do a pretty good job on both grass and edges. Just be careful not to hit stones too often.

The blades do wear out fairly quickly, but luckily, you get 20 additional blades when you purchase the GT50 grass trimmer from GTech.

Furthermore, they offer a pack of 50 replacement blades for only £3.99 AND free delivery. Click here to buy the new blades.

What are People Saying…?

Even though it was just recently launched, the GTech GT50 grass trimmer already garnered plenty of positive reviews from users. They mostly seem to like how easy it is to use and the reliability of GTech products.

Let’s see what one satisfied customer had to say:

Lightweight strimmer with a flat bowl spinner which helps to keep the strummer horizontal to the lawn. Excellent piece of kit that is very easy to use. Need to take care when edging near brick or concrete or plastic cutter will snap. I now have several GTech tools and can recommend them. – Michael H.

What’s the Downside…?

Combing through the reviews, there are some mentions that the 30 minutes run time simply wasn’t enough for some people and they were left frustrated that they couldn’t finish their entire lawn in one go.

However, that’s not a direct issue with the product. One solution is to buy an additional battery, which you can do from here.

Note: It doesn’t appear that they have an updated battery colour at the moment, so it remains black like the old models. I’m sure this will change over time.

Let’s see one of those reviews:

Very reliable, but as with all battery machines does not have enough time to finish before recharge necessary. Otherwise, excellent tool! – Richard K.

Advantages

  • Ergonomic handle & harness
  • Lightweight at only 1.85kg
  • Versatile
  • Easy to use
  • Safety switch

Disadvantages

  • 30 minutes run time might be too short for larger gardens

Is it Suitable for You..?

If you’re looking for an easy and affordable way to give your lawn a neat finish, the GTech GT50 grass trimmer is your best option on the market.

It’s incredibly lightweight and easy to use, and thanks to the handle and harness your shoulders and back won’t feel a thing.

If you have a larger lawn though, the 30 minutes run time might be a bit short for you. In that case, check out one of our alternatives.

The bottom line…

Overall, there isn’t that much of a difference between the GT 4.0 and the new, GT50 version. If you own the GT 4.0 and it still serves you well, I don’t see an immediate need to update to the latest version.

But if you still don’t have a grass trimmer from GTech, the GT50 is a great buy. The 1.85kg weight makes it very suitable to use even for the elderly and provides a quick and easy way to tidy up our lawn.
