OK, let’s get started…
A powerful and ergonomically-designed grass trimmer, the Black & Decker STC1820 is highly rated by customers and for good reason.
With a cutting swath of 28cm, and a fast and furious cutting speed of 5500-7400 RPM, you can expect effective and clean cutting, making this trimmer ideal for small to medium-sized lawns.
Note: Keep an eye out below for the CM-100 add on, which changes the trimmer into a lawn mower, with height adjustable cutting settings.
It’s one of the best string trimmers you can get for trimming areas around walls, pathways and fences. And with a price of only £60 (without battery) and £147 (with battery), it proves to be one of the most valuable string trimmers on the market.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The unit comes without a battery unless you select it on Amazon. If you have other products from Black & Decker which use the same 18V battery, you can use one of those in this trimmer. Check before buying!
Now, let’s finally take a look at all those amazing features you can get for that price.
Trim n’ Edge
You can finally give your lawn neat edges all around thanks to the Trim’n’Edge technology.
It produces extremely precise edging, and all you need to do is just twist the pole of the strimmer to switch it from trimming to edging mode.
Once you do that, a handy edging wheel allows you to guide the trimmer with precision to get that perfect edge around your lawn.
Ease of Use
The Black & Decker STC1820 PCB features a second handle for added comfort and control over how you trim your lawn.
It’s also fully adjustable, which means that you can extend the length of the telescopic tube to suit your needs.
In addition, the trimmer only weighs 5lbs, ensuring you don’t get too tired even if you have a lot of trimming to do.
Thanks to these powerful batteries, you won’t need to worry about tangling with cords or accidentally damaging them while using the Black & Decker cordless grass trimmer.
To get more specific, it has an 18V Li-Ion battery with 2.0Ah of charge that produces a run time of around 20-30 minutes and can be fully charged in just 5 hours.
What makes this even better is that you can buy the trimmer without the battery to save some money, and use the battery from any other Black&Decker product from their 18V line.
Or, you can buy it with the battery and charger included, and then use those for future Black&Decker products you intend to buy.
Automatic Single Line Feed System
You can now keep your focus on trimming the grass instead of changing the worn out string because the trimmer does this for you.
It automatically detects when a string snaps or is worn off and feeds a fresh piece of string, all without ever stopping the strimmer. Pretty handy, right?
Just like many other Black&Decker garden tools, the STC1820 grass trimmer also sports their trademark technology, E-Drive.
This ensures a high torque gear system is used for the trimmer, allowing you to trim your lawn even faster.
It can power through pretty thick, tough and overgrown areas quickly and without getting stuck.
However, please bear in mind that this is not a commercial petrol powered machine so it is not going to perform like one.
In addition, you can also adjust the power between eco and turbo mode. Thanks to this feature, you can save battery time by using less power for lighter work.

What are People Saying…?
Buyers absolutely love the fact that this trimmer is cordless and that can be used anywhere without worrying about a power socket.
The fact that it cuts the grass with ease also seemed to surprise some of the users, as they didn’t expect such high power from an 18V battery.
The power output that cordless tools produce now has come a long way since they first came to the market. You just have to look and even a lot a tradesmen use battery tools now.
Let’s see what one satisfied customer had to say.
I took delivery today, charged the battery and trimmed about 150 yards of lawn edging very quickly. I LOVED IT!!! I am usually quite critical of build quality and in recent years have even found fault with German design but I just can’t fault this. The design and build quality is superb and it worked remarkably well on my first strim attempts (and in low power mode too.) I just wish I had bought one earlier. VERY WELL DONE Black and Decker. – Bob Osborne
What’s the Downside…?
One problem people seem to have with the Black&Decker is that it did not have enough battery life to finish their lawns in one charge.
However, it’s clearly stated on the product that it’s meant for small to medium-sized lawns, so it’s not much of an issue with the product itself.
We have a relatively large garden, although I don’t think the strumming area is much larger than any medium size garden would be. The problem we had, was the strimmer only lasted for about 20 minutes at a time and I ended up needing to do the strimming over 3 days. Overall, it’s still a god strimmer, but use it only if you have smaller gardens. – Mr. F
One option is to buy a back-up battery. The other is to run in eco-mode to prolong battery life and then make sure that it is fully charged before you use it. 5 hours makes a full charge.
- Wide cutting swath
- Easily converted into edging mode
- E-drive technology
- 30-minute run-time
- Automatic feeding system
- Easy to use
- No cords to mess with
- Not suited for larger gardens
Is it Suitable for You..?
If you have a small or medium-sized lawn with a lot of edges, walls, or paths, the STC1820 18V strimmer will work wonders for you.
It’s easy to switch between the trimming and the edging function, and thanks to the edging guide wheel, you can achieve crisp edges every single time.
Also, it’s designed with usability and ergonomics in mind, so you don’t have to spend all your energy on trimming – the strimmer does most of the work for you, including releasing the string as and when needed.
The bottom line…
Overall, the Black&Decker STC1820PCB is a well-designed, high-quality grass string trimmer with a wide set of innovative features. It’s ideal for trimming and creating a neat and tidy lawn border.
You also won’t have to worry about a tangled cord or having a power socket nearby – the strimmer is fully cordless, and its battery can be used with the entire 18V line from Black&Decker.
If your lawn is not that big and has a lot of edges and paths, it’s really hard to find a better alternative than the STC1820PCB.
