To be fair, the previous version, the GTech HT3.0, was exceptionally good. I even gave it a 9.1 rating in my review.

But GTech wouldn’t release a new version if they weren’t confident that it outperforms the old one. Let’s see how they compare.

GTech Hedge Trimmer HT50 vs HT3.0

I’m glad to see that all the core features that deserved my 9.1 rating, and almost 4,000 5-star reviews, are still present in the new version. 

I’m talking about the improved durability of the blade, the long run time, and the interchangeable battery. But more on these later!

At first glance, the obvious change is the colour finish. Just like the other products from their updated line (Lawn Mower and Grass Trimmer), this one also has a white finish which I’m personally a big fan of. 

It looks much better in the garden and has that elegant feel to it.

However, the key improvement over the previous model is in the ability to cut thicker branches. The HT50 model has a 25mm blade cutting width, which means it can cut branches up to 2.5cm in diameter with ease.

The length of the blade is also almost 50% longer than the previous model, which means you can cut more of your branches with fewer cuts. This in turn allows you to finish the job faster and enjoy more free time.

All of GTech’s hedge trimmers have been so popular largely because of their long-reach handle. It reaches up to 10 feet (3 metres in new money…), allowing you to reach even at the top of tall hedgerows.

Note: The pole is not telescopic, nor does it extend. It’s a fixed pole which, with the length of the cutting head, allows you to reach up to 10 feet with it for all those hard to reach places.

For even better control over the hedge cut, you can adjust the head to rotate 135°.

And with it being so lightweight, most people will be able to use it at the full length of intended use.

With a full charge, which takes only 4 hours, you can get a 60-minute runtime. 60 minutes is on the upper limit of the average hedge trimmer runtime, so I’m glad to see GTech have managed to achieve this. You can get plenty of tasks done in your garden in an hour.

To monitor the status of your battery, you can press the button on the top and the LED indicator will lit up showing how much “juice” you have left. That way, you will never be caught off-guard with an empty trimmer.

The best part about modern cordless tools is that they can use the same battery on many different tools. The 18V lithium-ion battery that comes with the HT50 can also be used with GTech’s cordless grass trimmer.

This option allows you to save money by purchasing just the unit, or have a spare battery at all times so you can increase your runtime by 100%.

Improved blade

Longer and wider

As I mentioned earlier, the blade is the main improvement over the previous version. GTech have already built their blade to be extremely durable and high-quality, so it’s good to see they’ve kept the same blade.

However, they improved two key components of it. It has a cutting length of 51cm and a cutting width of 2.5cm. This is great news, especially if you have thicker branches in your garden.

Other cordless hedge trimmers don’t usually go above 2cm cutting width, so this feels like a major improvement and a step in the right direction for all cordless hedge trimmers.

The only downside we could find from online reviews is that people sometimes cut through the cable accidentally when trimming their hedges.

However, with enough caution, you should be able to avoid this problem altogether.

Does the job, but the cord can come in the way when using it, which is not very safe as you can accidentally cut it. But I found that wrapping it around my wrist before pressing the trigger solves the issue quite well. – Steph L.

Due to the simplicity of using it, people trim their hedges much more frequently with the Bosch AHS 50-20.

They also love the fact that it’s quiet, lightweight and easy to carry around.

A wonderful hedge cutter, and so light to use. I find I use it much more frequently than when I used a mains-powered electric cutter. Now I can occupy a few spare minutes with a quick trim – no need to go to all the bother of getting extension cables out, and no danger of cutting the cord. And it is quiet – no need for ear protectors, unlike petrol hedge cutters. I have not yet managed to flatten the battery, even after an hour’s usage. The only downside of this trimmer is that it can struggle cutting through harder and thicker branches.

On the bright side, if you use the special teeth near the top and have several goes without pushing too hard, you can also get through thicker stuff.

It doesn’t easily cut thicker branches – however you can get through thicker stuff if you back off and have several goes and don’t push too hard. The auto reverse & retry action works quite well – it sort of gives you a warning that it’s going to stick and gives you a chance to back off. It’s excellent for trimming a large number of small shrubs such as boxwood and spirea, as well as making first pruning passes at larger shrubs.

However, this trimmer shines the most at plants with low moisture content and small to medium branches, such as asparagus, aster, coneflower and many other perennials.

People love that they no longer have to go through the fuss and difficulties of tangling with cords or carrying a heavy trimmer around their garden.

What’s even more important, their hedges seem to look more beautiful than ever.

This one does the job admirably. I like the fact that you can twist the body of the unit to make it easier to use when cutting the side of the hedge. When thinking about which type of hedge cutter to buy, it can often be easy to jump straight to a decision without thinking about all of the considerations. We think these key questions are best to ask yourself before you get yourself a petrol powered one.

#1 – Noise

Petrol machines are one of the noisiest type of power tool you will get. For that reason, do you think using it will cause noise pollution to your neighbours or the wife!? If so, perhaps you should reconsider your options…

#2 – Cost

The maintenance costs and petrol required to run a petrol mower will be higher when compared with an electric version, mainly because the motor requires more work and you have to regularly top up with petrol.

#3 – Weight

You will normally find that a petrol machine weighs more than an electric version because of the engine parts and petrol you have to carry around. If you are worried about one which is too heavy remember to check the weight of it first.

#4 – Distances

When deciding which hedge trimmer to go for it can be a difficult decision. Here are the questions that we think you should be asking yourself before you decide whether to buy an electric hedge trimmer or not.

#1 – Distances

Electric hedge cutters require a socket to be relatively close by. Most come with around 10 metres of cable so if you need to go further than that you will also need an extension lead. Trailing a long cable around the garden can be quite annoying and also dangerous in cases where you get it caught up in the blades.

#2 – Noise

With an electric hedge trimmer the noise will be far lower when compared to a petrol machine. This is ideal if you are in a built up area and don’t want to annoy the neighbours every time you want to cut the hedge.

#3 – Size of Branches

Most electric models have between a 12mm and 20mm tooth opening size. This means that any branch larger than that size will not get cut properly. The smaller sized opening is suitable for smaller hedgerows but will struggle with thick, large branches. Makes ure to check out the tooth opening size before buying.
