We decided to review this grass trimmer because it gets good reviews and is both a cordless and corded trimmer. The price tag is a little higher than most so let’s take a look to see if it’s warranted.
Quality– Lithium batteries last longer and charge better – The shaft of the pole is telescopic | Usability– Runs on battery and mains power – Only 2.8kg including battery pack | ||
Robustness– Trims normally and adjusts to do edges, too – Charger can be used across multiple battery types | Performance– 18V battery lasts for up to 25 mins – 45 minute fully charging time |
On the face of it this cordless grass trimmer from Ryobi sounds great. The ability to use both battery powered and corded power sounds like a great idea, so it seems like a great product. Here are some of the main features:
- Lightweight at 2.8kg including battery pack
- Adjustable cutting width from 25-30mm
- Switches between corded and cordless operation
- Adjustable pole for different sized users
What Users Say
Users really rate this product highly. Of particular note was the fact that the line cord used to do the trimming is very durable and feeds itself out nicely, whereas other trimmers do not have the same ease of use. The result is a powerful trimmer that cuts away at all the grassy areas you have and even gets in between the paving slabs.
People who used it found it easy to assemble and commented that it is a sturdy and well built piece of kit which is well balanced in the hands when using it in the garden and that it’s also lightweight. The fact that you can adjust the pole for people of different heights was an added benefit that some users liked because they were either tall or many people in the family used it and were of varying heights.
People appreciated how easy it was to switch between the normal trimming mode and edging mode which meant they were able to effectively cut the border edges where they needed to. Overall, users rate this product very highly and can recommend it to you.

What We Say
The fact that this Ryobi Hybrid Line Trimmer allows you to switch between corded and cordless use seals the deal for us. There is nothing more annoying than needing to finish off a bit of the lawn and the battery run out. If this happens now you can just plug it in and finish it right there and then rather than having to wait for 45 minutes to recharge the battery pack.
Its adjustable pole allows for use between people of different heights without giving someone a backache, which is a great design feature. The ability to be able to switch the head angle for normal strimming and edge trimming has also been well thought out and a nice feature.
A lot of trimmers today seem to have problems with the auto line feeding and people can get quite frustrated that they don’t work properly. However, the guys at Ryobi seem to have designed this machine well enough in order to prevent that from being a problem as the line feeds out nicely.
Being on the more expensive side you can really see where you money has gone, into two places:
- The design
- The quality of build
Design features such as those listed above are ideal and what the majority of people will be very thankful for and the build quality will ensure that this well designed product should last you a very long time. In our eyes you are getting a lot for your money here and if you can afford to spend that little extra it’s well worth it.
Is it Right for you?
For those who want a top quality product and are prepared to pay a little more this is the one you should be getting. The trimmer is very well designed and made so should not cause you any problems whatsoever, which is what you want when you’r working hard in the garden. The ability to switch between corded and cordless power is enough for us. Get one before they sell out!
