The Gtech 20V Impact Driver is the best way to tackle heavier tasks in your home or at your workplace. It has an incredibly high torque output at 180Nm and a LED spotlight to help you see the task at hand more clearly.

You can either purchase the entire bundle, which includes a 20V battery, charger, and a driver bit set, or just the base unit if you already have a Gtech battery and charger from their power tools line. That way, you can save almost half the price!

Note: The batteries are only interchangeable between the power tools, not the vacuum cleaners or hedge trimmers.

How can you be sure if an impact driver is the tool you need?

Many people find it hard to decide between a combi drill and an impact driver for their household tasks. That’s mainly because they essentially work the same way, except for a few key differences.

Combi Drill vs Impact Driver

The main difference between a combi drill and an impact driver is the activation of the impacting mechanism. In an impact driver, the mechanism isn’t activated until the required torque to keep driving is greater than the torque generated by the motor alone. 

At that point, the internal hammer that is attached to the motor starts to rapidly strike the anvil attached to the bit. Thanks to these rapid and strong blows, the additional torque can help you drive long sheetrock screws.

If we put this by the numbers, the difference is pretty clear. An impact driver can provide well over 150Nm of torque, while a comparable combi drill is only able to deliver 50-60Nm of torque. 

In general, impact drivers are best used for heavy-duty tasks, such as furniture construction or deck building, while combi drills are more suited for delicate and precise tasks.

The new 20V Cordless Combi Drill from Gtech is actually a bundle that includes the main unit, a 20V battery, a power tool charger, and a drill bit set.

What’s the Downside…?

It’s hard to point out fingers on any aspect of this tool. I found two issues raised by previous buyers but even then there are still mixed feelings.

One is the battery life, which some say is really short whilst others say its excellent. According to Tacklife, though, the drill can work continuously for 40-50 minutes in load running once fully charged.

Another issue is the quality of the carry case, which some say is cheaply made, yet everyone still appreciates it.

In my opinion, I will speak of confusion in advertising. I noticed that on the Tacklife’s website, they say the tool is 20V, whilst it is tagged as 18V on Amazon UK. We need to confirm these figures!

The bottom line…

Powerful DCD985 M2

Most users are finding that it’s a very easy to use, powerful and reliable drill.

The new 5.0 batteries last a lot longer than the previous versions, which people find particularly useful.

It’s around 2.4kg so if you’re not that strong it can get heavy if used for long periods but it’ll be hard to find this kind of power and precision in a lighter drill.

In my opinion…

If you want an excellent hammer drill for both DIY and professional use, you’re looking at the right piece of kit.

The adjustable torque settings and 3 speed settings give you complete control and precision over your work.

You have enough power to tackle most tasks with ease and it will last a lot longer now that you have the lithium-ion 5.0 XR batteries on this newer DCD985 M2 model.

They’ve been designed to deliver more power and have less lag.

Other Options…

If you’re on the market for a cordless, brushless drill there is also another DeWalt option that you might want to look at. It’s the DCD796 drill which I have also reviewed.

The Ryobi Combi Drill is another worth a look.

You have two options: Amazon or Zoro. I recommend Zoro if you’re in the UK because they were the cheapest place I could find to buy it from.

Why Bother with this Bosch…?

Whenever you need to drill a lot of holes or drive screws into different materials, a combi drill is almost indispensable.

With it you can easily drill metal or wood, and as you move onto harder materials like brickwork or masonry, with the flip of a switch you are ready to go.

There are dozens of combi drill manufacturers, but few of them are as well-known as Bosch, which was created back in the 1950’s and has a solid reputation due to the high-quality craftsmanship you receive in every product.

What’s in the Box?

Buying a power tool and then realising it doesn’t include what you need can be frustrating.

With the PSB 1800, Bosch have taken care of that worry because they’ve included pretty much everything you will need to start using the tool straight away…

• The drill/driver tool

Lithium-ion Batteries

This combi-drill package includes not one, but two batteries.

Their lithium-ion technology means that they have virtually no self-discharge and can be stored for months without losing charge.

Other advantages of Lithium-ion batteries are that they are low maintenance, resist memory effect, and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures without any performance issues.

NiCad batteries can be heavy, which is a big problem when you are using them in a portable tool.

By using Lithium-ion batteries, Bosch have managed to reduce the weight of the drill, making it more comfortable to operate for extended periods of time.

Syneon Chip Technology

This tool has an intelligent electronic control system that Bosch uses in its top-of-the-line products.

This technology controls the performance ratio of the voltage and current that is sent to the motor depending on the power demand.

Having a Syneon Chip will allow this combi drill to operate without overheating and protects the battery against overload, increasing its life expectancy.

Check the Charge Easily

Batteries seem to love to stop working when we are in the middle of an important project. Keeping track of the charge can be now down by using the On/Off switch.

When you press it half-way, the battery charge-control indicator will light up.

It consists of three green LEDs that will turn on continuously if the charge is over 75%. If it is between 50% and 75%, two LEDs will light up. For 26% up to 50%, only one LED will light up, and for less than 25% one LED will flash slowly.

Lightweight But Powerful

The PSB 1800 weight is only 1.3 kilograms, but it has a maximum torque of 38 newton meters, so it is ready to drill and drive screws effortlessly into thick beams.

There are 20 torque settings you can choose from to adjust to your specific task. Fit light fixtures, hooks, cupboards or shelves on walls and ceilings of wood or brick with no problems.

For tougher jobs, use the hammer drill setting and expand the drilling capacity to even the hardest materials.

Excellent Design

Bosch has included a keyless chuck in this tool that enables you to mount a bit in just a few seconds. Changing from one bit to another to drill holes for different sizes couldn’t be easier.

If you need to work in dark or hard-to-see areas, the integrated LED will provide optimum lighting so you can clearly see what you are doing.

An ergonomic handle with a soft grip ensures precision and comfort while working, whether on soft wood or hard concrete.

Ergonomic design

Having a drill slip while you are working can cause severe damage to you or to the object you are working on.

The redesigned handle on the R18 is now 20% thinner than the previous model, with a rubber grip and trigger that let you comfortably and securely hold it in one hand.

This tool feels well-balanced and has a good amount of protective rubber that can tolerate daily bumps and scratches, although there are some parts made of plastic that could get damaged if you drop the tool on a particular angle.

Brushless motor

One of the main features of this device is the technology it uses in its motor. Instead of brushes and a commutator, a step motor controller creates the rotation and turns the electrical energy from the battery into mechanical energy.

A brushless motor provides many advantages over a brushed one:

• Since there is much less friction, there is also less heat, which increases durability
• Having no carbon brushes means less maintenance, which results in less downtime
• There is less noise and electromagnetic interference generated
• Fewer components allow for a larger motor, which in turn increases the power and torque while making the tool lighter
• Battery life can be as much as 50% higher

Accurate controls

When drilling, you can select between two gear settings, while clockwise and anti-clockwise direction is made possible with a sliding switch.

As a security measure, when the switch is set to a centred position the trigger will be immobilised. This prevents accidental squeezes that could make the tool operate when it is not expected.

This tool has a pressure-sensitive trigger that increases speed as it is squeezed, with a balanced spring mechanism that lets you accurately select the proper one.

Built for tough and delicate jobs

By choosing the percussion mechanism, the drill will also work as a hammer, allowing you to drill holes into hard materials like masonry or granite.

With up to 60 Newton meters of torque, it has plenty of power to drill even large holes quicker.

Turn off the mechanism and drill into softer or delicate materials like wood or plastic, or to use it as a screwdriver.

When screw driving, you can choose between 10 e-torque control settings to regulate the power of the drill, allowing you to set the screws exactly where you want them and stopping them from being driven too far into the piece, as well as preventing stripped screw heads.

Its 13-millimeter keyless chuck makes it quick and easy to fit a wide selection of tips and accessories. The tool includes a double-ended screwdriver bit with your purchase.

Illuminate your workspace

No longer will you have to pop a torch in your mouth to see what you are doing while working in dark sports.

This Ryobi brushless combi drill set has an LED on the base which lights up whenever the trigger is pulled.

What makes this a great feature is that the beam is centred to point exactly where the bit meets the hole or screw.

Blue-coloured indicators light up on the switches to show you the torque and gear being used and make it easy to change settings in a low-light environment.

The interior electronics and the battery are linked to provide constant and reliable adjustment of torque and power.

Here is how you can compare products properly:

• Check the model number. The full model number…Often there are different versions of the same model, such as “P1” and “P2“
• Older models of DeWalt drills have the 2.0 battery. New models have a superior 5.0 XR battery
• Ask how many batteries you get with it. It might be the body only while other deals have 2 batteries
• Does the package contain a carry case, bag or nothing? Decide which is right for you.

What Users are Saying…

Customers who had used previous versions of DeWalt drills with the 2.0 battery were very surprised how much of a difference the new 5.0 XR batteries made to the power output and how long they lasted.

The option to keep the work light on was seen as positive by all users, but one did comment that it’s easy to leave it on and drain the battery, so watch out for that…

It is rated very highly by a range of domestic and commercial users, so it’s a perfect tool whatever your level of work.

It’ll basically handle whatever you throw at it, yet still remains lightweight and compact.

In my opinion…

The great thing about this DeWalt 796 hammer drill is that it will do everything you need.

It’s not too large that you’ll be lugging around a heavy duty piece of kit (it’s only 1.8kg including battery), but it still packs a punch to tackle most jobs.

I like this review I found on YouTube of the DCD796 and 791 drills, so it’s worth a quick watch.

So no matter what you’re asked to do at home, it will take it on. And should you need it for a heavier workload, it’ll take that on too!

It’s also got the hammer function should you need it. The other drill in the above video, the DeWalt 791 is smaller, lighter and does NOT have the hammer function.

The new batteries, the lithium-ion 5.0 XRs, are also a great addition and you won’t be disappointed by the power and run-time they provide.
