OK, let’s get started…
The AHS 45-16 is one of the best hedge trimmers manufactured by Bosch. They’ve managed to design an extremely lightweight and easy to operate machine without sacrificing any power.
It’s also the smallest and most affordable in Bosch’s line of hedge cutters, coming in at only £55.99. Let’s see how it compares to other models from the same line:
As you can see, it truly is the smallest hedge cutter from Bosch, designed for only small hedges that need light pruning. If you have large and thicker hedges that need regular maintenance, check out our review of the Bosch AHS 70-34.
Okay, now that you’re familiar with hot the AHS 45-16 compares to other Bosch models, let’s get into the details and see what exactly makes this model so special.
Key Features
Let’s start by looking at the key features at a glance:
KEY FEATURES
- Lightweight (2.6kg)
- High cutting speed (420 Watt motor)
- Diamond ground blades (45cm)
- Best suited for smaller hedgerows
Lightweight
Trimming the hedges in your garden shouldn’t count as a workout. The Bosch AHS 45-16 weighs only 2.6kg (5.7lb), allowing you to handle it with ease.
This means that you can use the hedge trimmer regularly without putting too much strain on your shoulders and back.
Bosch managed to design such a lightweight tool by installing a miniature electric motor and a high-quality hard plastic case, without having to worry about a fuel tank or a battery case.
High cutting speed
Considering its size and weight, the Bosch AHS 45-16 has outstanding cutting performance and a no-load stroke rate of 3400 spm.
The 420W motor provides a quick and extremely potent blade movement, allowing you to cut through your hedges with ease.
When comparing it to other Bosch models, you might have noticed that it generates only 30W less power than its bigger “brothers”. So, you basically get the same amount of power in a smaller package.
The hard plastic case was designed to ensure continuous airflow that cools the motor, allowing it to keep running at optimum levels for longer periods of time. Truly ingenious engineering, I must admit.
Diamond ground blades
The blade on the Bosch AHS 45-16 is made with diamond ground ensuring they stay sharp and provide a clean cut each and every time you trim your hedges.
This guarantees that your bushes look better and fresher by preventing bruising on the leaves, which could lead to infections.
With a tooth spacing of 16mm (0.6in), and a blade length of 45cm (18in), this hedge cutter is best suited for smaller hedges.
Ergonomic design
Many hedge cutters are designed to be lightweight nowadays, but weight doesn’t mean much if handling the trimmer is uncomfortable.
But Bosch has a solution for that as well! Trimming your hedges with the AHS 45-16 is surprisingly comfortable, even in the most difficult positions.
It’s designed with optimum balance to allow both vertical and horizontal cutting. This was achieved by maintaining small outer dimensions to help you maneuver it with ease.
In addition, it has a soft-grip handle that prevents any irritation to your palm you might notice from the vibrations.

What are People Saying…?
The Bosch AHS 45-16 has received a lot of positive feedback online from existing customers. It has well over 1300 5-star reviews on Amazon, further proving that Bosch really did deliver on their promises with this one.
People mostly seem to be impressed by how easy it is to use, allowing them to finally get on top of trimming their hedges before they get out of control.
What a bargain…top product by a top brand. I ordered this and it came a day early, very sturdy and powerful, and I had no idea that it could make such short work of virtually anything it touches. It comes with a sheath protective cover for when not in use and also has a safety grip that must be compressed before you can start the trimmer with its trigger. Surprisingly quiet for such a powerful beast and has made the garden so much easier to manage…I highly recommend this as it has so many uses apart from cutting the hedges…I use it on grass I can’t get my mower around, thick weeds, and my bloody neighbours overhanging tree.- Barry
What’s the Downside…?
The only downside we could find from online reviews is that people sometimes cut through the cable accidentally when trimming their hedges.
However, with enough caution, you should be able to avoid this problem altogether.
Does the job, but the cord can come in the way when using it, which is not very safe as you can accidentally cut it. But I found that wrapping it around my wrist before pressing the trigger solves the issue quite well. – Steph L.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Would this be sufficient to trim conifers?
A: We use it on a low conifer hedge which it deals with effortlessly. We chose it mainly for it’s low weight, but it is very sharp and trims much better than our admittedly quite old bigger and heavier previous machine.
Q: Can I buy product already assembled and ready to go?
A: The product does not come ready assembled but the assembly is simple and not heavy work. It is mainly the handle and trimmer skirt which is clipped in.
Q: What safety features are incorporated in this hedgecutter?
A: Common sense really. Both hands needed to operate it. If you cut the cord it will switch off. Wear gloves.
